The Realm of Colour; Pigments and the extraordinary Apelles Palette.

Sale Price: NOK 90.00 Original Price: NOK 150.00

Painters and non-painters alike, if you want to know more about the magical realm of colour, this is the text for you!

A combination of more technical colour theory and art historical content, this text goes in depth about the truly astonishing Apelles Palette – a spherical palette inherited from antiquity that is still used by prominent painters today, such as Odd Nerdrum. In academia, the four-coloured palette is often referred to as a ‘limited palette,’ resulting in a misconception; that is has its limits. Arguably, for a painter with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the so-called limited palette, the palette is – in fact – unlimited. First described by Pliny the Elder, the palette of Apelles of Kos consisted of ‘’four colours only.’’ With the following four, most colours can be mixed and imitated – even a mixture that appears to be blue.

This is the only guide you will ever need. Consisting of 26 pages, it includes 12 illustrations and images, extensive end-notes with additional text and information, as well as a thorough colour mixing exercise in two parts for those who wish to completely master the palette. A few paragraphs of the text, was included in the program for 2026 at the Nerdrum Museum (Stavern, Norway).
